How to Return, Cancel Items You Accidentally Bought on Amazon

1-click is not always your friend.

On the Internet, we're so used to ordering something with one click that sometimes we order things accidentally.

I was drowsily browsing iPad mini cases before bed one night in the Amazon app on my Apple tablet, when I must have brushed past the 1-click button. I drifted off to sleep and woke up to a message that my Yippee Series spring light pink smart cover was on its way. Despite the very cheery-sounding name, I wasn't thinking pink or even smart cover when I was dressing my iPad mini. And I wish I could say that this was the first time such a thing has happened to me, but I've accidentally downloaded more than one book for my Kindle in the past.

So what to do? I've got the answers, whether you've accidentally purchased an Apple Watch ($300.00 at eBay)  or never meant to download Go Set a Watchman.

An Ounce of Prevention Is Worth a Dollar of Cure
The best way to correct something is to prevent it. So turning off one-click is the place to start. On Amazon.com, go to Your Account > Settings > 1-Click Settings > 1-Click Status. You'll see the option "Turn Off Everywhere." Do it.

Turn Off Amazon 1-Click For the Kindle Fire, if you're concerned about accidental Amazon content store purchases (like in the Amazon Appstore) you can enable parental controls and save yourself from yourself. Swipe down from the top of the screen and go to Quick Settings > More > Parental Controls > On. Enter and confirm a password and press Finish. This won't change your settings for your Kindle or for Amazon Video purchases on non-Kindle Fire devices, though.

Now on to what to do if you have bought something you didn't mean to.

Amazon.com
If, like me, you've purchased an item from "Earth's most customer-centric company," then your best bet is to stop it before it ships. Go to Your Orders > Cancel Items. Select the items you wish to cancel and then Cancel Checked Items.

If you realized too late that you ordered something and it's already shipped, then go to Your Orders > Return or Replace Items. Then from the drop-down choose Bought By Mistake. You'll be able to choose a return option and print a return label. Some items cannot be returned. If you've purchased one of them, contact Amazon directly.

Kindle Book
Downloading a book for the Kindle is the easiest of processes. Almost too easy. So if you really meant to buy Pride and Prejudice and not Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, go to Manage Your Content and Devices within seven days and select Your Content > Actions (next to the book title) > Return for Refund. Or contact Customer Service.

Amazon Video
If you never intended to watch the film version of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies but accidentally purchased it, you can get a refund within 24 hours as long as you haven't streamed or downloaded it. Go to Digital Orders > Cancel Items > Reason For Cancellation > Cancel This Purchase.

Amazon Digital Music
You can't return something you've mistakenly downloaded from Amazon Digital Music. But you can contact Amazon and see what you can work out.

Amazon Appstore
Likewise, something from the Appstore is yours forever. But again, try contacting Amazon to see if they'll bend the rules a bit.
